Mohamed Salah impresses as Liverpool ease to win over Southampton

The Egyptian bags a brace as Jurgen Klopp’s side cruise

A virtuoso performance from Mohamed Salah ran Southampton ragged as his two goals inspired Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Anfield and fired the Egyptian to the top of the Premier League scoring charts.

His summer arrival for £38million, at the time a club record, was questioned by critics after his disappointing spell at Chelsea but on this form he is looking an absolute bargain.

Both his first-half goals had a touch of class and his constant threat had visitors backpedalling for 80 minutes before his departure to a standing ovation – by which time Philippe Coutinho had added the third goal.

Star man – Mohamed Salah

This was an outstanding display by the Egyptian, who was heavily involved in nearly all of Liverpool’s best moments until he left the pitch to a standing ovation in the 80th minute. His first goal was a sublime finish while his second was all about the speed of thought as he exploited a hole in Southampton’s defensive line to tuck away Coutinho’s superb through ball.

Stat of the match

Salah set a new club record by taking his tally of goals in his first 12 Premier League matches to nine. That surpassed the eight scored by Robbie Fowler more than 20 years ago.

Virgil van Dijk
(Peter Byrne/PA)

Virgil van Dijk looks set to be a Liverpool player sooner rather than later. Conceding three goals would not have been what the Dutch defender hoped for when he arrived at Anfield but there is a real touch of class about him and he showed enough to indicate what an asset he could be to Jurgen Klopp’s side.
