Track talk: Big moves as teams jostle for position

British Speedway’s own version of musical chairs has started!

It’s like Fantasy Speedway, after a handful of meetings clubs start to look at ways in which they can strengthen their side.

In Wolverhampton’s case, they have done nothing else but stick to their promise by bringing Swedish star Jacob Thorssell back into the side once he reached full fitness.

Sadly, it meant Scotty Nicholls had to make way. If ever a club and rider seemed comfortable with each other, it was Wolverhampton and Scott.

But this was only ever going to be a short term marriage because of the Thorssell factor and Nicholls, thankfully, immediately found employment at Peterborough who were looking to bolster their side.

Nick Morris is also a welcome addition to the Parrys International Wolves side after recovering from his broken wrist. It means heading into Monday’s Bank Holiday double header with Belle Vue they are up to full strength for the first time this season. They haven’t done too badly so far and if Thorssell and Morris can hit the ground running they are sure to be a force.

Club owner Chris Van Straaten will be looking forward to it. When he called me to inform me of Thorssell’s injury in March, he said: “I’m gutted because I was proud of that team we put together!” Well now we will see whether his pride was justified, in many ways the season starts now. They head to the brilliant National Speedway Stadium in Manchester for a midday start and there is sure to be a bumper crowd for that one.

Regular readers of my waffle will know how much I love the place and, if you can, I recommend doing both Manchester and Wolverhampton on Monday.

Monmore Green hosts the evening meeting at 8pm and with the kids on half term it’s a great opportunity to take the whole family. I’m expecting two cracking meetings – Aces to win at noon, Wolves to win at night!

Elsewhere, Peterborough added Josh Bates to their side alongside Nicholls at the expense of Lasse Bjerre and Ben Barker.

Fan pressure is greater than ever when things aren’t going to plan – mainly thanks to social media. I saw an example of where Peterborough advertised their next meeting and a typical response was ‘you won’t see me unless you sign someone’!

Swindon also announced on Thursday they had snapped up former Cradley man Ellis Perks to replace James Shanes.

I also understand another club is on the verge of snapping up a new rider. Watch this space!

Good to see Birmingham get their first win under their belt against Edinburgh at Perry Barr on Wednesday.

New signing Adam Ellis went through the card and he could be the man to transform their season.

And Cradley have snapped up Jack Smith to replace the injured Tom Brennan.

All I need is a yellow tie and I can become the Jim White of speedway on transfers!
