A lively encounter with Leek ended 39-32 in the hosts’ favour and kept them within striking distance of Veseyans, who are one spot and three points above the drop zone.

It was Leek who struck first when they benefitted from an interception.

Stafford responded and a scything run by Louis Dewsbury and good work from Phil Kay resulted in Alosio Yamo Yamo bagging a try, which was converted by Christian Stelian.

Leek hit back with their second try before the action swung to the other end of the pitch with Stelian crossed for an unconverted try.

The visitors countered again to score a second pushover try, but it was Stafford who led 19-17 at half-time following a try and conversion from Stelian.

Callum Jones then bagged the bonus point try for the hosts, converted by Stelian, before Leek crossed again to stay in touch, only for Louis Dewsbury to claim Stafford’s fifth try.

Leek worked their way to another try through a catch and drive, but Stafford were not to be denied.

A Stelian penalty extended their lead and although Leek bagged another score, Tom Windibank landed what proved to be the winning try.

Wednesbury paid the price for a poor first-half display in a 32-26 reverse at Edwardians.

The home side dominated the opening period and led 24-0 before Lee Allwood crashed over for the try which Matt Dale converted.

Another try for the hosts early in the second half looked to have put them in control, but Wednesbury hit back through Josh Harris, with Dale adding the extras.

Wednesbury then had four tries ruled out with the referee saying the ball had not been grounded.

Andy Clarke finally added to their tally, again converted by Dale, but a penalty for Eds stretched their lead before Chris Dawes claimed a late try.

Rugeley bagged a crucial 24-15 win over promotion rivals Willenhall in Midlands 4 West (North).

The victory moved Rugeley level on points with second-placed Willehnall.

Essington edged out Bloxwich 34-29.
