Thumping win keeps Wolves well in race

Head coach Matt Jones believes the pressure is all on Wolverhampton’s promotion rivals after they got back to winning ways with a convincing win over Telford Hornets.

Saturday’s 59-3 win saw Wolves quickly banish the memories of the previous week’s defeat at Leek and stay two points behind second-placed Tamworth in Midlands Two West (North).

With just six games remaining, Jones is confident his team will overhaul the Staffordshire outfit.

He said: “If you look the run of games, theirs is tougher. If we can eliminate any slip-ups, we should do it at a canter.

“We’ve got a strong squad and have players coming back from injury who will only add to that.

“I believe we have the best team in the division but have let ourselves down with a couple of results.

“We are more than up for the challenge ahead. It was important we got the five points on Saturday to keep up with Tamworth. The pressure is all on them.”

Teenage fly-half Jack Evans and forward Adam Ellis, who bagged two of Wolverhampton’s nine tries, were the standout performers in a comfortable victory.

Despite a break from league action this weekend, Jones intends to field a full-strength team in a Staffordshire Plate semi-final at Leek, when revenge will also be on the menu.

He explained: “We want to set the record straight after being beaten there in the league earlier in the month. There were a few things which went on in the game, off the ball, that we weren’t happy about.

“We want to keep some momentum going into a big game against Ludlow the following week. We’ll be going in battle-hardened.”

Meanwhile, in Midlands Three West (North), third-placed Burntwood beat Handsworth 54-27 in a high-scoring encounter.

There were, however, defeats for Eccleshall – 23-7 at Cleobury Mortimer – winless Cannock – 68-7 at Edwardians – and Wednesbury – 24-0 at home to runaway leaders Shrewsbury.
