Their clash with Uttoxeter was played as a league and cup double-header and it was the home side who took the spoils with an impressive 29-0 success.

Wednesbury started with all guns blazing and struck after five minutes. A rolling maul saw the visitors pushed back towards their line with Ryan Roberts collecting the ball and diving over. Sean Bottomer added the conversion.

Bottomer was successful with his boot again in 15 minutes when he slotted over a penalty to make it 10-0.

Then it was the turn of Matt Dale , who score two quick-fire tries in the space of five minutes, both following good work by Wednesbury’s forwards.

Bottomer added one conversion to see the hosts lead 22-0 at the break.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure at the start of the second half took just five minutes to score again.

After they were awarded a penalty close to Uttoxeter’s line, some quick thinking from Steve Worthy saw him take a quick tap and dive over the line for the try. Bottomer added the extras.

That proved to be the final score of the game as some resilient Uttoxeter defending kept Wednesbury, who host Handsworth this Saturday, at bay. Wednesbury coach Gary Summers was pleased with the success.

“That was the result we expected with the team we put out. Hopefully we can get a decent squad out again before the Christmas break and finish the year off on a high.”

Promotion hopefuls Burntwood bounced back from successive defeats to claim a 20-12 victory away to Trentham.

The win leaves then third in the table, five points behind Old Saltleians.

Cannock were unable to field a side for their clash with free-scoring Shrewsbury, handing the leaders a walkover and five points.
