Hughes got little out of the BDO No 1 as he was whitewashed 5-0 in sets to bow out of his last four tie and end his hopes of a first Masters title,

The Black Country thrower had defeated John O'Shea to progress past his quarter-final 4-2 earlier in the day, but a second appearance in the final proved to be a bridge too far.

It was three-leg sets action all of the way at Lakeside, which is hosting this year's Masters as well as the World Championship.

Hughes had opened his challenge on Friday with a relatively routine 3-1 victory over Gary Robson, himself a three-time Masters quarter-finalist.

'Yozza' then engaged in a see-saw battle with Jim Williams on Saturday, getting past the Welshman by the slenderest of margins.

Their clash went to a deciding set and the final leg, before Hughes prevailed 3-2 to move into the final day of fixtures. Play was upgraded to the first-to-four and then best-of-seven format.

The 30-year-old is back in singles action after reaching the last 16 of the Grand Slam of Darts, on his debut, at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

Hughes, the BDO No 3, first made his name two years as an unknown with a run all the way to the final of the Masters, losing 7-3 to Martin Phillips.
