Bloxwich's Dennant was thwarted in a third round last leg battle having accounted for Wolverhampton's Jones in the previous phase,

writes Craig Birch.

Both toed the oche at the Robin Park Centre in Wigan with four places available for the worlds, at Alexandra Palace in London from December 15 to January 2.

Jones got a bye past his board, while Dennant beat Aaron Monk 5-3 to progress after recording two 180s and a 177.

Stourbridge's Nick Fullwell fell at the first hurdle, edged out 5-4 by Kirk Shepherd. Rugeley's Mark Hylton, who has twice made the worlds before, was beaten 5-3 by Kevin Dowling.

Dennant produced excellent darts in a 5-2 defeat of Jones, who is set to lose his Pro Tour card and will have to go to Qualifying School to stand any chance of remaining on the tour.

'The Scholar' moved on to a tie against Ritchie Edhouse, where he led 4-1 and missed two darts at double 16 for the match.

A monumental collapse then ensured as Edhouse won the next four legs to go through, Dennant never getting another shot at a double.

The 25-year-old's place in the organisation is safe for another year, though, as he won a two-year tour card after coming through Q School last January.
