Spanish duo on trial at Walsall
Walsall were today ready to welcome two Spanish trialists as Dean Smith closed in on another forward signing.
The duo have been summoned following the manager's close season scouting trip to Spain and will be put through their paces with the Saddlers this week.
Smith is also set to complete a deal for a striker later today, having agreed terms with a player late last week.
Working with one of the division's tightest playing budgets, Smith has always been keen to explore new ways of finding players and that was the motivation behind the Spanish mission. He admits both players could be signed up should they impress during the trial.
"It's just to have a look at them and see where they are at in terms of our level and the level they are at, in terms of where they have been playing," he said.
"If it fits with us there is a possibility of them signing, if not they will go back but we will keep that relationship open and hope there is something which comes up.
"One of the lads is someone we saw out there and the other is someone who came up and is available. It helps when there are two of them, as they can speak Spanish together!"
Smith has put the emphasis on finding attacking players after his side struggled for goals last term.
But one player who won't be signing at the Banks's for next season is Milan Lalkovic. The forward scored six goals during a season long loan with the Saddlers last season from Chelsea and was released by the Premier League club last month.
But Smith believes the Slovakian under-21 international has had offers from abroad and will not be returning.
"I have spoken to Milan and he won't be coming back," he said. "I think he may have offers from abroad and I know there are teams that have enquired too from the Championship.
"I had a really good chat with him. He is a really good lad and I have a lot of time for him. He actually said that he didn't want to go to another League One team out of courtesy to us, which is a lovely thing to say."
