Bilston Town have begun the search for a new manager following the shock departure of Wayne Spicer.

Spicer resigned from the West Midlands Premier Division club on Sunday night and is poised to take the reins at Redditch United, who play three levels higher in the Southern League Central Division.

His exit has come as a blow for Bilston, who sat fifth in the table - one place off the promotion spots - before the season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Spicer, who had previously managed both Black Country Rangers and Wolves Sporting, engineered an impressive turnaround after replacing Noel Cotterill when the club were 16th in the standings.

But the opportunity to manage Redditch ultimately proved one he could not turn down.

Bilston have now turned attentions toward sourcing his replacement, with the club receiving 13 applications within the first two hours of announcing Spicer’s exit.

A Bilston statement read: “Wayne and his management team were instrumental in turning the fortunes of the club around following their appointment midway through the season, leading the club on a long unbeaten run and into the promotion race.

“This has alerted clubs higher up the pyramid to his ability and he will now pursue those avenues with our blessing.

“As a club we are disappointed in losing Wayne but we would never stand in the way of any opportunity for him to better himself in the non-league game and he leaves with our best wishes for the path he chooses.

“As a result we now have a managerial vacancy and invite any interested parties to apply via email to denise_bilstontownfc@outlook.com for consideration.”
