Climbing the walls: Temptation of Easter was too much for me

A week ago, I vowed to get serious with fitness action, and while there has been some success, one notable public holiday has got in the way.

So for all the extra running and training at home, my children’s insistence on me celebrating Easter with them has negated any positive impact.

I was determined to get through the weekend without stuffing my face with chocolate, only for them to produce a Cadbury’s egg with two Double Decker chocolate bars (other sweet treats are available).

Perhaps eating it all in one go and then excusing the rest of the weekend was not the best idea though...

I wasn’t expecting much from the scales yesterday morning therefore and – unsurprisingly – that is what I got.

I broke even over a week, at least, so we go again!

Even if I am a pound higher than when I started three weeks ago...

I could get sucked into the ifs and buts – like if I had taken this seriously from the word go I would have been half a stone better off than I am now just by losing 2lb a week instead of putting that pound on.

But while the weight has not fallen off as I hoped it might when I started this column, I am feeling the benefits of regular exercise, which proves I should not just measure my progress in weight.

Before this started, I would be lucky to get to the end of my road on a run before pulling up with a stitch, aching legs and out of breath.

But I can feel the strength I have created through my legs and into my core muscles – they are willing to go further.

So while I’m about 25.7 miles away from completing a marathon without having to stop, at least I can now manage that first half-a-mile before collapsing in a heap.

It’s the little things that matter, right?

The one thing I am struggling with though is my breathing pattern – whether it is running, or trying to do a plank

I feel could push myself further if I train myself to breathe properly – answers on a postcard from any fitness experts out there who could help me with that please!

I want to hear and see what you are up to sporting-wise during lockdown – the good and the bad – so email your pictures and videos to derek.bish@expressandstar.co.uk or contact me on Twitter @DerekBish_Star.

I will include the best ones in this column and retweet plenty of ideas that everyone can get involved with.
