Sedgley sink leaders to boost title hopes

Sedgley Ex-Service checked Hotshots SC’s title charge by bagging the spoils in the Staffs and West Midland League’s match of the day.

The Division One leaders saw their lead at the top cut to six points as second-placed Sedgley claimed a 3-2 victory.

Daniel Ward and Simon Hickman, with a 33 break, gave hosts Sedgley a flying start by taking the opening two frames.

Bal Sembi hit back for Hotshots as a break of 50 helped him take frame three. But Sedgley were not to be denied and Andy Highfield sealed victory before Mark Sutton took the final frame for Hotshots.

Willenhall Liberal A continued their impressive run of form with a 3-2 win against Landywood SC A.

Libs’ Lee Bannister knocked in a break of 53, with team-mates Nathan Wood and Adrian Rosa (37) also winning. Landywood replied through Jack Harris and Steve Barton (38).

Shifnal WM A picked up a good win this week as they recorded a 4-1 home win over Sedgley Wm A with a great all round team performance. Matthew Davies took the opener before Chris Jones won frame two on the back to give them the perfect start before Sedgley hit back through Darren Oakes who compiled a break of 57 to give his side some hope. That was as good as it got though for the visitors as Mike Dorey with a break of 67 and Paul Lloyd with his own break of 41 topped the night off for Shifnal.

Poets Corner A boosted their Division Two promotion hopes with a 4-1 away-day success at Stafford Institute B.

Bill Stanton, Pommy Kang, Jon Bate (32) and Mark Archer were all on good form for the visitors. Paul Edwards bagged a consolation for Stafford.

Dartmouth Central A climbed out of the drop zone on the back of a 3-2 win at home to Goodyear A.

Dan Ward took the opener for Dartmouth, but they found themselves behind after Steve Goodall and Kevin Saunders hit back for Goodyear. Michael Douras then levelled the match before Paul Piddock took the decider.

Woodfield Social B have opened up a five-point lead at the top of Division Three following a fine 5-0 demolition of promotion rivals Bilston S&S B.

Mike Collins, Enzo Mongiovi, Dwyer Evans, Lee Haselum and Dominic Ferraro, who hit a 38 break, secured the whitewash.

The highest break of the night came from Goodyear B’s Carl Jones, who knocked in a 50 on his way to helping his side to a 3-2 success at Wednesfield RBL A.

Joe Hutton (31) and Simon Atwood followed Jones’ example to put the visitors three up before Tony Downes and Bill Reece took the last two frames for the hosts.

Bushbury Grid A are setting the title pace at the top of Division Four.

Grid are seven points clear of second-placed Wolverhampton Electric B following a 4-1 win over Sedgley WMC C. Phil Richards, Ian Lewis, Duncan Simpson and Nick Hodgkinson saw them home with Sedgley’s reply coming from Paul Green.

Bottom-of-the-table Woodfield Social D picked up a vital win against promotion hopefuls Bushbury Grid B 3-2.

The winners on the night for Woodfield were Roy Blewitt, Alan Matthews and Michael Skidmore combined to see Woodfield triumph 3-2. Rob Temple and Simon Flinders replied.

The title race in Division Five has been blown wide open following long-time leaders Bushbury Grid C’s defeat at promotion-chasing JD’s SC A.

Dave Holmes, Dan Willetts, Brian Bottley and Mark Poole all did the damage as JD’s won 4-1. Bushbury are now second on frames difference behind Rugeley SC.

Bentley Moor’s Carl Wilkes set a season’s best break of 62 for the division during his side’s 3-2 victory over Forty Four B.

Dean Tilson and Darren Cattell, in the decider, joined Wilkes in the winners’ enclosure.

Division Six leaders Esssington WMC C got their title push back on track with a 4-1 win at home Wednesfield RBL B. Andrew Sandland took the opening for Wednesfield but from then on it was all one-way traffic as the leaders took the next four frames through for Terry Hales, Stuart Lovack, Gary Painter and Andrew Osbourne.

Wednesfield Cons C closed the gap on the teams above to put themselves into promotion contention following a 4-1 win over Woodfield Social E. They got the through victories for Daron Tonks, Darren Cartwright, Michael Tierney and Stuart Mason with Phillip Chambers picking up a win for Woodfield.

Richard Davies and Colin Reade are through to the seni-finals of the Pairs & Singles Handicap.

The duo overcame Pommy Kang and Bill Stanton despite Kang knocking in a 56 break.

John Fallows and Angus Way are also through after a good win over Rob Wharne and Graham Beadmore (42) with Way contributing breaks of 49 and 30.

Daniel Pugh and Tony Downes beat Neil Drewitt and Callum Drewitt with Steve Bull and Alex Bull completing the last-four line-up by seeing off Dean Simpson and Dan Ward.

The pick of the action in the quarter-finals of the Secretaries Handicap Cup saw Dean Skidmore beat Paul Lloyd 216-167.

Skidmore had a run of 44 while Lloyd replied with a break of 56 in a high-quality match.

Lee Thomson (31) edged past Mark Gilbert (38) in a close match (194-165).

Mark Archer and Andy Round are also through after victories against Tony Downes and Stuart Lovack respectively.

n Holders Oldbury crashed out of the Inter Town Championship after losing 4-3 to Halesowen.

Mark Sutton, Callum Downing (58) and Jamie Brown put Oldbury 3-0 up but Halesowen hit back through Avtar Sohanpal (63), Phil Cusack, Craig Nicholls and Ray Gannon to progress.

Wins from Simon Hickman, Reanne Evans, Arun Mehta and Andrew Highfield saw Sedgley A beat Stourbridge 4-3. Wolverhampton A were also 4-3 winners, against Wednesfield.

Chris Jones, Neil Leighton, Colin Reade and Paul Dunn did just enough to get the job done for Wolverhampton.
