Forest Falcon’s under-15s edged Beacon Lions 2-1 in a tense final of the Stourbridge and District Youth Football League Cup.

They won the game in dramatic fashion thanks to a flying 25-yard free-kick from Rob Walker with 10 minutes to go.

Manager Warren Bustin paid tribute to his players who he said were underdogs ahead of the match, which was held at Dudley Sports in Brierley Hill.

“Beacon are the best team in the league and they won it this season,” he said.

“We were by far the underdogs going into the game.

“It was our first cup final since under-8s and it was great to win it.”

Falcons, who play in Division One of the SDYFL, went 1-0 up after around 30 minutes through Lewis Pugh.

“A ball was played over the top by Rob and Lewis latched on to it,” said Bustin.

“He outpaced the defenders and finished well. It was a top corner finish from around 15 yards out.”

Beacon equalised around five minutes into the second half.

“We were up against it then,” said Bustin. “They put us under massive pressure.”

The game remained level until around ten minutes time, before Walker stepped up to take a free-kick.

He launched the ball into the top corner, which sealed the win for Falcons and a spot of revenge having lost to Beacon in a final earlier on in the season.

Falcons originally played under the name Withymoor Colts.

“It was our first season representing Forest Falcons,” said Bustin.

“We were the first team to go into the final this season for Falcons. I think they have 20 teams.”

Team captain Jack Bywater, who plays in goal, was awarded man of the match by a league official and a Wolves scout who had travelled to watch the match.

Each player was presented with a medal and the team were handed the trophy.
