The Black Country-outfit took the lead after 20 minutes through James Quarry before Alvechurch equalised just before before half-time.

But the Midlands Premier champions proved too strong for the West Midlands Division One runners-up, and scored two goals in quick succession in the second half before sealing the game with a late fourth.

It means Wednesfield were unable to add a third trophy to their cabinet this season after winning the League Cup and Birmingham Saturday Vase.

Gill said: “I feel sick to be fair. The plan was to hit them quick and hit them hard.

“We missed two great goal-scoring chances in the first half – going into half time 3-0 up would have been a fair result. But they got one goal before half-time which was unjust.

“In the second half Alvechurch were a class act. They demonstrated why they are going in the Evo-Stik League.

“I felt we could have got something out of the game.

“But I feel unbelievably proud of the lads, they have done unbelievably well this season.”

Around one thousand fans flocked to Molineux to watch Wednesfield battle it out against Alvechurch for the historic and prestigious JW Hunt Cup.

Alvechurch had the best of possession in the opening 20 minutes, but Wednesfield came closest to scoring.

They had two good chances which required finishes from close range following crosses delivered out from the wing, but they could not find the target.

But it was Wednesfield who struck first when Quarry latched onto a good ball over the top, before running clear of the defence and placing the ball into the top right corner.

Wednesfield goalkeeper Tom Whitehouse then reacted smartly to keep out a header before Reese Mason flicked the ball onto his own post during an Alvechurch attack.

But Wednesfield were pegged back by a goal just before half-time when Mike Wardle charged down the left wing and launched the ball across the box for Josh March to fire home.

Alvechurch took the lead on 62 minutes through March, who fired into the roof of the net from the edge of the box after latching onto a loose ball.

The Midlands Premier champions extended their lead three minutes later from the penalty spot after Ryan Edmunds was brought down. Jamie Ashmore stepped up to fire home from 12 yards.

Ryan Edmunds made it 4-1 for Alvechurch on 86 minutes after chipping the ball cheekily over Wednesfield’s shot-stopper from close range.

Meanwhile, Willenhall Town are on the lookout for a new boss.

The Lockmen finished 14th in the West Midlands Premier last season, and have invited applications for the role.
