Nuno: Wolves will make call on Raul Jimenez

Nuno Espirito Santo insists whatever recovering striker Raul Jimenez does over the close season will be Wolves’ decision – not Mexico’s.

Jimenez, who has made excellent progress in his recovery from a fractured skull, spent time training with his national team over the international break.

Mexico chief Tata Martino has said they would like the 29-year-old to be part of their squad for the Olympic games in Tokyo this summer.

But Nuno says he can only be considered if he plays for Wolves first.

“I think he must join us, the moment it is clear he can play for Wolves then anything can happen but, first, he must play for us,” said Nuno.

“With all the respect to the national team coach, it’s our decision.

“I understand he is positive and wants to count on Raul for the Olympics but we have to be patient here.

“We have to make the right decisions, not afford any kind of mistake and respect the doctors.

“He was delighted to be there (to train with Mexico again), it made sense.

“They protected him and he’s a more positive person.

“All his Mexican team-mates have seen him, asked all the questions, but they saw a good Raul and each day he was better.”

Nuno, meanwhile, has confirmed Jimenez still has to avoid close contact despite taking part in sessions at Compton, and that his Wolves team-mates have adapted well to the situation.

“No, Raul still has to use his protective (headband) and he’s not allowed to have any kind of physical contact,” said Nuno.

“But the team-mates are very aware of that. They help when they approach Raul inside the training sessions, they’re being careful.

“Everybody is wishing to have Raul back at 100 per cent, so we still have to be patient.

“He needs some time for a proper healing of the bone.

“But he’s in good hands, and that’s what gives me 100 per cent confidence.”

Asked again whether he believes Jimenez will feature again in 2020/21 for Wolves, Nuno added: “Yes, with the patience required.

“I see him, and I see him so well, so I’m positive we’ll have Raul.

“What I see is the same. But we take all the precautions in terms of medical.

“What I can assure you is we won’t make a mistake on that aspect.”
