Chorley manager can’t wait for big Wolves rematch

Chorley manager Jamie Vermiglio reacted with joy after pulling Wolves out of the hat in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Vermiglio, whose side downed Derby County in the last round after the Rams had been forced to field a team of youngsters due to a Covid-19 outbreak, said he and his players had been dreaming about drawing Premier League opposition.

He said: “That’s what we really wanted, Premier League opposition, great.

“And there’s a bit of history because in 1986, Chorley played against Wolves at home and beat them 3-0, so we just need to do that again.”

There was little time for Vermiglio and his players to dream about what might lie ahead, with tonight’s league clash with Leamington the immediate priority.

The manager added: “We’ve got a game, for a start. The lads have trained today to try to get some of that lactic acid out of the system. We’ll prepare for Leamington and then we’ve got a few other games, and then we’ve got to prepare for that.

“It’s just tough, though, to keep them focused on the league, which is our priority. Nevertheless, they’re going to start thinking about Wolves and dreaming big, I’m sure.”

Wolves Fans’ Parliament have contacted the club regarding the possible set up of virtual tickets for the tie.

Elsewhere in the draw, Manchester United will host fellow Premier League title contenders Liverpool at Old Trafford while League Two side Cheltenham Town pulled out a plum tie, as they host Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Elsewhere, Former Albion defender Craig Dawson spared West Ham's blushes as they progressed to the FA Cup fourth round with a 1-0 victory over non-league Stockport at a sodden Edgeley Park.

The Premier League side, 86 places above their Vanarama National League opponents, avoided a giant-killing as Dawson headed home from Jarrod Bowen’s right-wing cross seven minutes from time.

Full fourth round draw: Cheltenham v Manchester City, Bournemouth v Crawley, Swansea v Nottingham Forest, Manchester United v Liverpool, Southampton or Shrewsbury v Arsenal, Barnsley v Norwich, Chorley v Wolves, Millwall v Bristol City, Brighton v Blackpool, Wycombe v Tottenham, Fulham v Burnley, Sheffield United v Plymouth, Chelsea v Luton, West Ham v Doncaster, Brentford v Leicester, Everton v Sheffield Wednesday.
