Wolves quiz fans get the chance to Beat Bully

He scored 306 goals for his beloved Wolves and has a stand emblazoned with his name, but now Steve Bull is trying his hand in the world of trivia.

It’s a far cry from his heroics on the pitch, but the legendary striker has thrown himself head first into a project that will challenge supporters to ‘Beat Bully’.

A free-to-download phone app is expected to be launched sometime next month and it will pit fans of the old gold and black against Bully in a series of quiz questions, paying to play to be in with a chance of winning prizes.

Competitors will have 10 seconds to answer each question while a pre-recorded video on their mobile phones will show Bully answering the question himself – usually debating out-loud while friends heckle him behind the camera.

The idea was the brainchild of lifelong Wolves fan Tim Page, who has worked in trivia for most of his working life.

The 51-year-old, from Willenhall, is keeping the finer details of the game to himself ahead of the launch, but he expects this to be the start of a new wave of trivia quizzes.

“The idea comes from an evolution of an existing trivia game that we run in the (United) States,” he said.

“We have a couple thousand restaurants in the States that run a multi-player trivia game that we’ve been doing for about five years now. There’s around half-a-million games that are played across that network.

“We were thinking about how we evolve that and it’s a direct result of me moving back from the States, where I lived for 25 years.

“There are two big ideas – continuing what we’re doing on a pub and restaurant basis, with in-pub electronic trivia – and secondly, what we call an expert trivia.

“The real idea behind it is that we focus narrowly on a person, in this case Steve Bull – that’s because I grew up coming to Molineux as a Wolves supporter.

“It’s about creating a game around a fan base and around a particular person.

“We can ask Steve a whole bunch of questions about Wolves, his career, about Wolverhampton and make it really local.

“Anyone who’s a Wolves fan, comes from Wolverhampton or the Black Country will want to play this game.

“It’s really personal to me. I’ve been making software for more than 30 years and when I make new products, there’s an adage that you do what you know.

“If I’m going to make some kind of tribute to Wolves, a game that really sits nicely with Wolves fans my age, then who do I pick?

“I could have gone after Nuno obviously and do current stuff, but for me selfishly, it’s about Steve Bull.

“That was the hey-day for me because I went to Wolverhampton University in the late 1980s and I went home and away and followed the guys through thick and thin.

“Steve was a big part of that, he got us out of the fourth division and all the way back up, so it’s personal.”

Sat in a room overlooking a quiet Molineux Stadium, Bully and a handful of camera crew recorded 41 questions and the former footballer’s answers, some of which will be used in the final product of the game.

And the 54-year-old is excited for the challenge, despite being less than confident in his chances.

“It’s challenging for me and for other people and whether people know more about Wolves and me than I do,” he said.

“Judging by the questions, there I think they’ll know more than me. Tim is a massive Wolves fan and he recognises what I did for Wolves and he wanted to give a bit back to me.

“When he came up with the idea I thought it would never work but the more it’s gone on you can see the end product.

“A lot of Wolves fans will have a lot of fun doing it.

“It can range from young kids to older people because it includes the current squad, the old squad and my squad when I used to play. It’s a variety of questions from all generations so anybody can have a go.

“I’ve got the easy job to try and answer some questions. They’ve done all the hard work and I’m just here enjoying it and hopefully the Wolves fans will enjoy it too.”

Although Tim is keeping much of the app a secret before it’s made public, the software gone in to create it has been completed.

All that is left is to complete the filming and editing of Bully’s videos – and the creator can hardly wait.

“The actual app is finished and we’re now doing recording of questions that will be in the very first product,” Tim added.

“We’re going to choose a date sometime in February to launch it, but it’s ready to go. People can expect to have a lot of fun and re-live things you remember from the late 80s and 90s.

“They can stretch their limits of what they know about Wolves or what they think they know.

“We won’t say too much about what you’ll be able to win, but it’ll be pretty unique and special and all to do with Steve.”
