Wolves comment: An area which would not hurt to add to in January

Chairman Jeff Shi’s comments about the next transfer window have got Wolves fans excited.

He insisted Fosun have the capacity to strengthen the squad in January while recognising the need to make signings for the club to compete at a higher level.

Shi also said Fosun know ‘where we are maybe a little bit weak’, and that he has had regular discussions with boss Nuno Espirito Santo, strategising.

So, what kind of players could we see arrive in the new year?

Will they try to unearth some more gems or go for established stars?

Will they make permanent deals or opt for the previously successful method of loaning first, with the option to buy? All intriguing questions.

What we do understand is Wolves would like to add a central defender and a midfielder to their ranks.

This is thought to have been the plan for quite a while, but the desire to bring in the former has only been heightened by Willy Boly’s fibula fracture which could keep him on the shelf for several months.

And someone to potentially bridge what has sometimes been a sizeable gap between midfield and attack would not go amiss either.

That would be two fresh faces, then. But, for me at least, three would be the magic number.

Raul Jimenez – already on 10 goals for the season across all competitions – is a top-drawer striker.

Diogo Jota, who we are yet to see the best of this term, is a fantastic partner for him in a 3-5-2.

With Wolves using the 3-4-3 again, though, as well, there is room for another attacker.

Adama Traore, Pedro Neto and Patrick Cutrone are the others on Wolves’ books who can play in the forward roles.

For a front three, Jota and Neto are the ones who can play on the left – and those are two great options, with Neto showing signs of promise so far.

Jimenez and Cutrone are the proper centre forwards – and that does not really need urgent attention, despite Cutrone’s lack of goals as of yet.

However, on the right-hand side, Traore is the only option, so that could do with sorting.

Let’s be clear, signing someone of that position would not be done to give Traore a kick up the backside. After all, the strides he has made this campaign have been immense.

The Spaniard has arguably been Wolves’ shining light over the past few months.

Having another option as the club looks to push forward in the Europa League and do a solid job in the Premier League, too, would be very nice, though.

In terms of who could come in, it is difficult to say as Wolves do not tend to snap up players from their league rivals and, although they have turned out to be of sublime quality, the captures of Jimenez and Jota were not telegraphed.

But a right-sided forward who can chip in with goals and assists – someone who can set pulses racing as a substitute – sounds pretty good.
