Wolves boss Nuno: Even more to come from Diogo Jota

Nuno Espirito Santo hailed Wolves hero Diogo Jota for his stunning hat-trick against Leicester – but thinks the forward still has more to give.

Jota scored Wolves’ first treble in the Premier League era, completing it in stoppage time to seal a 4-3 triumph over the Foxes.

The 22-year-old only recently recovered from a hamstring injury, which kept him out of action for a month, and Nuno said: “He played good.

"I think he showed that he is back. He was injured, but he’s come back and he’s getting back on his best moments.

“He did very well, and he helped the team. Very good. He played very, very well.”

Jota was Wolves’ top scorer as they clinched the Championship title last season but initially struggled to adjust to the demands of the top flight.

He then showed glimpses of his true ability in the few games before pulling up against Bournemouth in December, with his performance on Saturday being perhaps his best in old gold.

But when asked if Jota is back to his best, Nuno said: “I hope not. I hope he can still do better.

“In any game, it is difficult to score three goals.

“But the work ethic of the boys goes beyond the scoring. I think all the team, offensively, did very well. In every offensive part of the game, I think we are very happy.

“When we score four goals, it means we have produced a lot of chances.

“Defensively? No. The set pieces, the goals we concede, but this is the game. If there were no mistakes, there would be no goals.

“What we try to work on this week now is that we must improve.

“At home, we cannot concede three goals, but it was a very good game.

“Three points, after two defeats in the league, means a lot.”

Jota’s strike partner Raul Jimenez also played a vital role in the victory against Leicester.

He held the ball up with aplomb and set up Jota’s winner.

“It’s what he’s been doing since the beginning of the season,” said Nuno.

"Hard work, high standards. Sometimes he scores, sometimes he doesn’t.

“We changed the shape a little bit, so it requires different tasks from the two who play up front.

“They have to drop, they offer things, and they do those things.”

Meanwhile, Nuno, who said Matt Doherty dropping out of the starting XI was merely a ‘tactical decision’, suggested there is no need to panic of Wolves’ lack of transfer activity this month.

Wolves have not signed anybody in the January transfer window, although Nuno has said previously they are open to getting someone who brings something ‘special’.

Nuno admitted his squad is short on numbers, but pointed towards the versatility of his current crop.

“We should realise that we have a versatile squad,” he added.

“It is short but really, really competitive.

"The balance they create among themselves is what allows us to react to their moments.”
