Mexican striker Jimenez was replaced by Adama Traore for the start of the second period, with Wolves 2-0 down before ending up 3-0 losers.

The 27-year-old has appeared in every single Premier League game this term, prompting fans to think he was substituted in the interests of freshness ahead of facing the Foxes on Saturday (12.30pm).

But Nuno, who had Willy Boly sent off at the Etihad, said: "No, no, we were trying, clearly, another approach.

"We were two goals down, and we try with the speed of Adama.

"Every time we recovered the ball, we tried to find him, because, with Raul and his characteristics, we pressed and City was recovering. We were trying to get with space.

"We were trying something, always keeping the shape of the team, knowing that it's hard to defend.

"We stayed organised and tried, but we didn't achieve it."
