Steve Bull: Call will surely come for Wolves' Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett

Wolves defenders Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett were not among those on international duty this past week – but they could well be next time around.

The key for those pair is just to carry on in the same vein because if they do, they will remain in the England conversation.

They were mentioned by a fair few as potential names for these two games just gone and, if there are injuries at centre-half, you would like to think they would be right in the mix.

Conor and Ryan do not strike me as players who will be really gutted if they do not get the call. They are concentrating on Wolves, what matters most, but if they do get the chance, I am sure they will make the most of it.

This international break has really put into perspective just how far Wolves have come in the past couple of years. We have had international players before, of course, but not quite at this level.

I was particularly pleased to see Matt Doherty get his first Republic of Ireland start – and then be in from the off against Wales too – as it has been a long time coming. He is the longest-serving player in the current Wolves squad and has dug in to have that recognition on the international stage.

Matt has been one of our best players so far this season – his recent PFA Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month award proves that. And it is the same with Jonny Castro Otto, who has been fantastic on the opposite flank and got his start for Spain against England on Monday night.

A fair few eyebrows were raised when he came into the club and Barry Douglas, a real dead-ball specialist, was moved on.

Jonny was signed and we all kind of thought ‘who’s he?’ He has certainly showed why Nuno was so keen to get him in though.

And Helder Costa scoring on his debut for Portugal at Hampden Park – the same ground I netted at on my England bow – brought back fond memories. It all makes you proud to be a Wolves fan.

The one thing you could say about the squad, though, at the moment is that there is not a lot of home-grown talent.

But would you sooner be in the Premier League, competing as we are, with a lot of foreign players or still in the Championship with more who have come through the ranks?

Being seventh in the top flight is unbelievable and, anyway, I am sure there is an academy graduate who will become a very important first team player in the next couple of seasons in Morgan Gibbs-White.

Finally, I am absolutely delighted to see the fund for young Zac Oliver has passed its £500,000 target.

I had the privilege of meeting Zac, who has a rare form of leukaemia called near haploid, last week. He is a lovely lad and hopefully the treatment he gets in America helps him back to health.
