He made the comments as a pundit during a BT Sport broadcast of Wolves' and Everton's 2-2 draw on Saturday.

McManaman presumably made the comments while he thought his microphone was switched off.

Wolves fans took to Twitter to air their grievances.

@dwoodley1990 tweeted: "So Steve McManaman on @btsportfootball has just said "I don't like Wolves" live on air when he thought he was off-air. That's very professional isn't it?"

@julie_lwood tweeted: "@btsportfootball i am a bt paying customer and if you ever allow Steve mcmanaman to commentate on the Wolves again I will leave. Shocking how a football ambassador can say live on air. ‘I hate Wolves’. Dreadful bt representative behaviour"

@funkinhicks tweeted: "So @btsport employ Steve McManaman who professes live on air that he hates @Wolves. I feel a subscription cancellation coming on."

@ntc03533278 tweeted: "steve mcmanaman tut tut caught on mic saying he doesn't like Wolves that is not gonna go down well."

@Findingnuno tweeted: "Just heard Steve mcmanaman say " I don't like wolves " live on by sport in a bit of audio that shouldn't have aired. That explains the negative commentary of them from him."

Tweeting to BT Sport, @kazzie16 said: "Are you going to ensure Steve Mcmanaman issues a public apology to Wolverhampton Wanderers as his "I hate Wolves" comment was broadcast live to all who were watching, very disrespectful from an assumed impartial commentator"

@MissStringerMus tweeted: "I’d like know why Steve McManaman dislikes Wolves so much? Lost a lot of respect for him after that game. Appalling commentary, backed up with a huffy comment at the end when he thought his mic was off. I think I’ll watch on mute next time."
