Coady netted his first goal of the season as Wolves thrashed Bolton 4-0 to win the league in style.

Nuno Espirito Santo gave the nod for Coady to take a penalty with Wolves 3-0 up, which he duly dispatched in front of 4,800 partying away fans.

And the centre-half, a strong candidate for the player-of-the-season award, said: “It was special. We trained properly last week, we wanted to go up as champions.

“I thought the boys were outstanding. To play like that after going up last week, a lot of teams wouldn’t have done that. The manager doesn’t let us lose our focus. We wanted to win the division and we can’t wait for next week now. We’re champions of the Championship, we can go and enjoy it now.

“It was like a home game and the fans have been terrific all season. It’s been sensational support.

“Last week was something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives and to go up as champions is really special.

“We’ll enjoy what we’ve done and look forward.”

Coady’s goal was his first since netting on August 9, 2016, against Crawley in the EFL Cup – exactly 100 appearances earlier.

It sparked wild scenes in the away end with the fans roaring loudly when Coady picked up the ball to take the spot-kick.

He explained how it came about: “I just looked over and the manager gave me a little nod. I thought I’d go over there and Benik (Afobe) would have said no and I’d have had to trudge back!

“Benik gave me the ball, that’s the type of lad he is.

“I don’t really cross the halfway line! It’s the quickest I’ve ran all season to go and get the ball!

“It was such a lovely feeling – in front of 5,000 Wolves fans as well, it was a special feeling for me.

“I took a penalty against Manchester City earlier in the season in the Carabao Cup and the keeper saved it, so there was no way I was going that way again.

“My last penalty in normal time was probably for Liverpool Under-18s, it was that far back.

“I’m not fussed whether I score or not. If we win a match I’m really happy. But to do it like that, it was lovely.

“My relationship with the fans is special and every one of them has been outstanding with me.

“Even through a couple of bad years for the team they’ve been there and this season it’s been special.

“I hope they’ve enjoyed the whole season, they’ve travelled home and away in their thousands.

“It was such a great feeling. It’s a really happy day for me.”
