Wolves 3 Burton 1 – player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players after a regulation 3-1 win over Burton

Published

John Ruddy

Just the one shot on target from Burton and it ended up in the net however Ruddy was unsighted as the ball squirmed through four players at pace. 6/10

Ryan Bennett

An assured presence at the back who had very little to do in the second half. 7/10

Conor Coady

If anything from this season defines "Coady 2.0" it's his perfect raking through pass to Helder Costa for the opening goal. Made a couple of important blocks too in what was another excellent display from a man whose campaign has been almost flawless. 8/10

Willy Boly

Used his Hulk strength levels to snuff out a few Burton attacks on what was otherwise a breathtakingly easy afternoon for the big Frenchman. 7/10

Matt Doherty

After his two-goal heroics in midweek Doherty played a supporting role here, doing his usual thing down the right flank. Got into a couple of promising positions and nearly teed up Afobe for a hat-trick after getting to the byline. 7/10

Romain Saiss

A very steady game in midfield, keeping things ticking along nicely. In contrast to N'Diaye his positional sense in defensive areas is very good, meaning Wolves tend to look a more assured unit with him in the side. Almost got on the scoresheet after winning the ball back just outside the Burton box and curling wide. 7/10

Ruben Neves

He didn't just dominate the midfield, he was the midfield. Standing up and applauding isn't really the done thing in the press box but it was incredibly hard to remain seated when Neves produced one of the passes of the season – in this or any other league – to somehow pick out Helder Costa with a perfectly-weighted ball that almost defied belief. This guy could find Shergar, he's that good. Dripping with class, poise, quality and composure. Better vision than the Hubble Telescope. It is a pleasure and privilege to watch Ruben Neves at work. 9/10

Barry Douglas

Like Doherty, a bit of a regulation performance from Douglas who didn't get too many opportunities to Bend it Like Barry from set pieces. Tidy and defensively sound. 7/10

Helder Costa

Picked up where he left off on Tuesday to produce a performance of real quality. An excellent first touch – which wasn't the case a few weeks ago – and breezed past challenges with the grace of a ballet dancer. Occasionally his end product let him down but certainly not for the goal – his third in eight appearances. He's stepped up to the mark this week. 8/10

Benik Afobe

It took a few weeks but the Benik Afobe that Wolves fans remember fondly is back. Nuno finally gave him an opportunity to impress from the start and he's responded with three goals in two games. The two he netted here were brutally and clinically despatched and showcased exactly what Wolves have been missing at times in the past few months with Bonatini misfiring. On this form Afobe will be the man that gets them over the finishing line. 8/10

Ivan Cavaleiro

Lively throughout. Could have netted on a couple of occasions and he showed great persistence to tee up the third goal. A constant menace to the Burton back line and ensured, as Costa did, that Diogo Jota wasn't missed in the slightest. 8/10

Substitutes

Morgan Gibbs-White (for Cavaleiro, 76)

Another bustling cameo which almost included his first Wolves goal when he latched onto Saiss' pass and fired wide. 6/10

Leo Bonatini (for Afobe, 82)

Received a great ovation from the fans but the game was dead at this point and aside from a few nice touches it was too late to make an impact. N/A

Alfred N'Diaye (for Neves, 90)

N/A

Subs not used: Norris, Batth, Miranda, Mir.
