The 59-year-old is currently the Championship’s longest serving manager having joined the Tractor Boys in 2012.

But he is out of contract in the summer and has repeatedly refused to answer questions about his future.

Ipswich owner Marcus Evans is believed to want McCarthy to stay at Portman Road.

But a vocal section of the club’s fans have become fed up with his style of football and want him to move on.

It is understood Reading are monitoring the situation if they part company with Jaap Stam. Wednesday are also are monitoring developments should they sack Jos Luhukay.

McCarthy is approaching his 1,000th game as a manager in a career spanning more than 25 years.
