Matt Doherty says it’s ‘a joy’ to play with Ruben Neves – but admitted Wolves were left deflated after their Boxing Day draw at Millwall.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches, with their lead at the top of the Championship now standing at eight points.

Wolves were leading 2-1 at The Den before being pegged back to a 2-2 draw. And ‘Doc’ said of the game: “We’re a bit deflated. Millwall started off quite well which we expected, they got the early goal and I thought we responded really well.

“We got in a few times, a better final ball from a lot of us maybe could have resulted in a few more goals.

“We got in numerous times in the first half and obviously in the second half we didn’t create as much.

“If we’d been a bit more clinical we could have put the game away.

“We might have lost the game last season, under these kind of conditions. It was quite hostile to start.

“We knew it was going to be a battle. Millwall away on Boxing Day, I mean it doesn’t get much harder than that in the league. But at least we didn’t lose.”

Doherty enjoyed a productive afternoon against the Lions and was fed passes by Neves on a number of occasions down that right flank. The Irishman said his 20-year-old team-mate was the best passer he’d ever played with.

“Last year I made a lot of runs and maybe didn’t quite get on the end of it – the quality of player we have this year is unbelievable in terms of passing,” Doherty said. “Neves’s passing is the best I’ve played with. It’s a joy to play with players who have that vision.

“Even Coady with the longer passes, he picks me out quite often in front of me so I get to run on to it.

“There’s no-one you’d think they wouldn’t fit in if they came off the bench, everyone knows exactly what to do.

“That’s part of why we’ve been so successful this season, people have taken to it like a duck to water. It’s all positive.”
