Matt Doherty receives first Republic of Ireland call-up
Wolves defender Matt Doherty has been called up to the Republic of Ireland's senior squad for the first time.
The call-up is Doherty's reward for a string of impressive recent performances at left back for Wolves.
He continued his fine form by being Wolves' match-winner with an assist and a last-minute winner in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Bristol City at Molineux.
The 24-year-old is in a provisional 40-man squad named by Martin O'Neill for friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia on March 25 and 29, both in Dublin.
Doherty will look to impress enough to stake a claim for a place in O'Neill's squad for this summer's European Championships in France.
Former Wolves strikers Kevin Doyle and Robbie Keane, as well as ex-defender Stephen Ward, are also in the squad for the two friendlies, while Brentford's Alan Judge has earned a debut call-up.
As expected Albion's James McClean and Villa's Ciaran Clark are also in the squad.
O'Neill said: "Both myself and my staff have been incredibly busy since qualification last November scouting and monitoring as many players as possible.
"I know that I will have a very tough decision to name a final squad for Euro 2016 and that is why I want to give players a chance to impress."
