Dean Saunders: Wolves must stop leaking goals
Dean Saunders today insisted he won't become the fourth Wolves manager to be sacked because of a dodgy defence as he pledged to bring players in.
Saturday's 2-2 draw against Leeds extended Wolves' winless run to nine games and saw them only out of the Championship relegation zone on goal difference after wins for the bottom three teams.
Wolves led for the 10th time at home this season through Lee Peltier's 53rd minute own goal only to trail to efforts from Luke Varney and Ross McCormack's penalty before Danny Batth's last-gasp equaliser.
Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the 5-1 defeat to Albion which saw manager Mick McCarthy sacked.
Including that landmark derby, Wolves have played 45 league games, conceded 83 goals and won only nine matches.
Saunders – whose haul of two points from five games is one less than predecessor Stale Solbakken got in his last five – said he will mend the leaky defence.
"Three managers have got the sack here through not being able to stop the team conceding and I'm not going to be the fourth," said the boss.
"We've got to do something and I've been on the mobile for about three weeks. Otherwise I'm going to be the next casualty and I've only been here five minutes."
Saunders failed in a £1m bid for Blackpool defender Alex Baptiste and a swoop for Curtis Davies from Birmingham but will speak to the board again about loan signings.
"We're talking every day to get people in but it's not that simple," he said.
"There are players available who can't get in Premier League teams but some are on £25,000-a-week, and some are on £50,000 or £60,000-a-week.
"I've targeted three or four and it's a case of whether we can afford it."
