It's a drop fight at Wolves admits David Edwards

Midfielder David Edwards today admitted Wolves are fighting relegation again.

Wolves go into Saturday's visit of Leeds fourth bottom of the Championship and just two points above the drop zone after wins for fellow strugglers Ipswich, Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley.

Mick McCarthy's Ipswich are now above Wolves – by two points – for the first time since he took over in October, at a time when his present club were bottom and his former team third in the table.

And with 16 games left, midfielder Edwards, confessed Dean Saunders faces a battle to keep Wolves from a second successive relegation.

"We're definitely in a relegation battle at the moment," said Edwards.

"We know the situation we're in and we know we're not too good to go down – we're not invincible.

"It's vital we start putting wins on the board."

Saunders believes Wolves have been held back by a losing mentality over the last two or three years.

"There's some truth in that – it's hard to get out of a rut when you're losing and it's hard to see where the next points are coming from," said Wales international Edwards.

"But it can turn around really quickly.

"When we get that winning feeling you can't see us losing a game – one win will bring confidence and then we can build on that."

Edwards is at least in a position to do something about Wolves' grim situation after recovering from a torn hamstring.

"I've had a good couple of weeks of training which have been really intense, so everything's fine," he said.

Wolves have won just one of their last 11 home games but Edwards believes Molineux could hold the key to toppling inconsistent Leeds, who have lost four out of their last six Championship outings.

"They're a very good team, and made some good additions in January," he said. "But we're hopeful of getting the three points in front of our own fans."
