Dean Saunders could build a new team at Wolves

Wolves manager Dean Saunders today vowed to build a promotion-challenging team at Molineux next season.

The new boss takes his team to Leicester tonight in a televised game still trying to hang on to his better players with the side just five points off the drop zone.

Saunders wants to land at least one target before the transfer window shuts at 11pm tonight having allowed Steven Mouyokolo, Ronald Zubar, Richard Stearman, Frank Nouble and loanee Jermaine Pennant to leave.

But he is fully confident with the changes he is making that he will have Wolves in a position to challenge for a return to the Premier League next season.

"I've been brought in to build a team for the future," said Saunders.

"I will say this to the supporters: We will have a team ready at the start of next season to challenge for promotion.

"We will have a balanced squad with the right amount of players of the right attitude.

"There are lots of players here who have done well in this league. The players have 17 games to show me they want to be here.

"So I'm not giving up on this season; we've got to get away from the bottom and then focus on next season."

Saunders is happy to rebuild the team, having done it last summer at Doncaster and with Wrexham in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

"The only difference here is some players are a lot more valuable and they're on longer contracts, so it's a lot more difficult to shuffle things around."

Second-placed Leicester have won five and drew one of their last six while Wolves haven't won in seven. But Saunders insists the game is ideal for Wolves, saying: "It's a great game for us.

"They're a good team but we're going to be a good team."
