Wayne Hennessey 'has left a legacy'

Wolves boss Terry Connor today declared Wayne Hennessey has left a legacy to give the team the slenderest of survival hopes.

Connor's side could be 11 points from the safety line by the time they face Manchester City on Sunday – and the manager accepts he will be called a "miracle worker" if he pulls off the highly unlikely rescue bid. Hennessey is out for at least six months after rupturing a cruciate ligament.

The Wolves No 1 was hurt in Saturday's goalless draw at Sunderland.

But the Molineux chief believes the Wales international's late save from James McClean's header which clinched a point should have gone in the net.

And Connor reckons the fact it didn't gives the players something to cling to as they look for the unthinkable – four straight wins to end the season, after five in 34 games.

Connor said: "I showed the lads the Sunderland video and told them that for 70 minutes they were great, but that one mistake could have undone everything and people would have been saying it was another bad day for Wolves.

"McClean had a great chance to score on Saturday, – any other game and that would have gone in.

"Somehow Wayne made a save, he stopped it on the line and picked it up.

"How many times has he made the save, but the ball bounced out and someone has tapped it in this season?

"Do we then win four on the spin, stay up and everyone says 'you're a miracle worker'? It's fine, fine lines.

"Everyone said after Saturday 'great result, great performance, well done' but that ball could have gone over the line."

Connor believes the point at the Stadium of Light enabled fans to see the good things going on – avoiding a club-record equalling eighth straight defeat.

He said: "If we'd have lost, everyone would have said 'you have lost eight on the spin, TC's no good' and they would tell you all the negative things."
