Sam Johnstone: West Brom are adjusting to Premier League

Sam Johnstone says the difference in quality between the Premier League and Championship is vast – but the goalkeeper is adamant Albion are adapting.

The Baggies have found the going tough since winning promotion to the top flight – with Slaven Bilic’s side yet to win in seven outings, drawing three and losing four.

Arguably the worst defeat came at Fulham on Monday with Bilic’s side outplayed by another promoted team struggling at the wrong end of the table.

Prior to the trip to Craven Cottage, though, the Baggies put in decent displays against both Burnley and Brighton.

And Johnstone insists the team is still moving in the right direction.

“Fulham wasn’t good enough but the previous two games we had played well and built some momentum,” the keeper said. “People have to understand that our team is adapting to the Premier League having just come up from the Championship.

“The quality is miles apart – it’s so much better. There is a lot of learning and improving to do. But it’s early days and we have to dig in and keep on fighting. There is a lot more to come from us.”

Johnstone admits it’s nice to go on to social media and read positive comments from fans – with those messages boosting his confidence.

“I’ve had to make saves but ultimately that is what I am here to do – I love making saves,” the keeper continued.

“But to then see people going out their way after a game to message you and say well done and nice things, it’s really nice to read to be honest with you.

“There have been points where I have had not-so-nice messages. But I think that’s the way the world is now – especially when you are a footballer.”
