Goals from Moussa Djenepo and Oriol Romeu saw Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side secure a deserved three points at St Mary’s.

The result would have been even more emphatic for the hosts had Sam Johnstone not made two outstanding saves in the first-half.

And Bilic admitted his side were not good enough.

“The first half was very, very flat from our point of view,” he said.

“We weren’t aggressive enough, we didn’t close them down. We gave them too much time - basically everywhere

“I’m very disappointed with the result.

“We have to improve everywhere - we can talk about this thing and that thing - but that simply was not good enough.

“In every aspect of the game they were better.”

Asked why Albion were so poor, particularly in the first-half, Bilic said: “Everything starts with a determination and an aggression.

“Everything starts with running, with timing your runs well, with anticipating situations, with reading situations when you are defending.

“But it wasn’t just lacking today it was absolutely lacking - especially in the first half.

“When your goalkeeper is your best player and you have lost the game 2-0 that is not good.”

Tomorrow marks the deadline Albion can make signings from fellow Premier League clubs and from teams abroad.

They then have until October 16 to bring in players currently playing in the EFL.

And Bilic confirmed he still wants at least one addition, if not two.

“Nothing has changed,” he said.

“We have to bring somebody in.”

Meanwhile the boss confirmed Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher missed out on a place in the squad for the Southampton game through illness.
