But while discussions regarding the Algerian have taken place, the Express & Star understands the striker is fairly low down on the Baggies’ list of targets.

Boss Slaven Bilic has made it clear he wants to sign another centre-forward before the transfer window closes.

And it is understood Karlan Grant remains his and Albion’s number one target with talks ongoing with Huddersfield over a potential loan move that could lead to a permanent transfer.

As well as Grant, the Baggies have sounded out Watford about signing either Andre Gray or Troy Deeney on loan.

There has also been contact with French side Rennes about a similar deal for Mbaye Niang.

While the Express & Star understands there are other strikers currently based abroad that Albion are interested in, with Metz forward Habib Diallo one of the players they are reportedly keen on.

Albion first tried to sign Slimani back in 2016 when they battled Leicester to bring the striker to England from Sporting Lisbon.

And they have made contact to express an interest in signing him again – with the forward enjoying a fruitful campaign on loan at Monaco last season where he scored nine goals in 14 games.

But it is understood the Baggies have only sounded out the Foxes to see how much Slimani would cost should they miss out on other targets. With money tight at The Hawthorns, Albion are keen to sign a striker on loan this window with a view to a permanent deal later on.

But with Slimani out of contract at the end of the season, Leicester hope to sell him permanently instead of losing him on a free next summer

Aged 32, the striker doesn’t have the long-term potential or re-sale value Albion strive for when bringing in players to the club.

But with the transfer window for deals with fellow Premier League sides and clubs abroad closing on Monday, Albion have had to do their due diligence to see which forwards are out there and available.

With Grant in the Championship with Huddersfield, they know they have until October 16 to get that deal done.

But if the 23-year-old hasn’t arrived by Monday, they also know the market in which they shop in will have been drastically reduced.

Alongside Grant, though, they would have until October 16 to bring in either Gray or Deeney following Watford’s relegation from the Premier League.

Both players have been told they can leave the club on loan.

And it is understood both are available on a temporary basis without the Hornets insisting on an obligation to buy clause in the deal.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have been linked with a move for Albion’s out-of-favour winger Kamil Grosicki.

The Baggies signed Grosicki in the last transfer window from Hull City to fire their Championship promotion charge. However, he has since fallen down the pecking order at The Hawthorns.
