West Bromwich Albion's Kyle Bartley celebrates scoring his side's third goal of the game against Chelsea.

The Baggies were hugely unfortunate not to win the pulsating clash at The Hawthorns with Tammy Abraham scoring a controversial equaliser deep into stoppage time.

Slaven Bilic's side had to dig deep and defend for long spells.

But they were clinical when they did go forward with the head coach adamant his team did enough to earn all three points.

But while the late equaliser was heartbreaking, nobody could doubt Albion's players gave everything for the cause. Here, we rate their performances.

SAM JOHNSTONE

Albion's game plan was to restrict Chelsea to long shots. But when those efforts did arrive, Johnstone coped with them well. The keeper twice made good stops to deny Kai Havertz and couldn't be faulted for any of the goals. 7

SEMI AJAYI

An impressive performance from the centre-back who made one impeccably timed tackle on Timo Werner in the box. Ajayi's reading of the game was excellent. He also utilised his pace well. 8

Kyle Bartley

It's not been an easy start to the season for Bartley. But here he was immense. Commanding in the air, he won numerous headers. He also made a number of important blocks and scored with a smart finish. 9

DARA O’SHEA

In the first 20 minutes, Chelsea got a lot of joy down the right – where O'Shea and Conor Townsend struggled to contain them. But the Irishman grew in stature throughout and stood firm against some relentless pressure. 7

DARNELL FURLONG

Outstanding in the first-half in particular, Furlong won his duel with Marcos Alonso so convincingly the Spaniard was subbed at half-time. Bright going forward, strong in the air and good in the tackle, he also registered a smart assist for Bartley's goal. 8

CONOR TOWNSEND

Found the first 20 minutes tough on his Premier League debut, but – like O'Shea – Townsend grew in stature throughout. He also used the ball well when in possession. 7

ROMAINE SAWYERS

An improved display from the midfielder who showed the battling qualities some fans question. Disciplined without the ball, Sawyers' composure on the ball – even when under pressure – helped spark counter attacks and gave Albion much needed respite from the relentless Chelsea pressure. 8

JAKE LIVERMORE

Another high energy performance from the skipper who worked his socks off to drive his team forward and keep Chelsea at bay. 7

MATHEUS PEREIRA

We all know about the flicks, the assists and the magic. And that was all on display here. But the Brazilian also works his socks off for the team and was so defensively disciplined here. A star – even in the Premier League. 9

GRADY DIANGANA

A constant menace for Chelsea to deal with, his dribbling and direct running was an important outlet for Albion. Like Pereira, Diangana was also excellent defensively. 7

CALLUM ROBINSON

The striker produced an outstanding finish with his left-foot for his first goal. His second was then a brilliant bit of opportunism to anticipate Thiago Silva's mistake. Growing impressively in the central striker role. Quality. 9

Substitutes

Hal Robson-Kanu (for Robinson 65).

Held the ball up well at times but will feel he could have done better with his clearance in the build up to Chelsea's third. 5

Matt Phillips (for Diangana 74).

Sam Field (for Pereira 90).

Not used: Kyle Edwards, Rekeem Harper, Cedric Kipre, David Button.
