The Express & Star understands the Baggies are currently in negotiations to sign striker Grant from Huddersfield.

Talks are also continuing as they bid to sign midfielder Gallagher on loan from Chelsea.

Bilic was asked specifically about the duo at the press conference held today ahead of Sunday's Premier League opener against Leicester.

And on the pair, the boss said: "They are players that are in positions and have the quality that we are trying to get.

"Hopefully, we are going to do it."

Albion have signed Matheus Pereira, Callum Robinson and Grady Diangana so far this window – three players who shone at The Hawthorns on loan last season.

Bilic says phase one of his summer transfer plans was bringing back those players – with the boss also determined Krovinovic returns.

But he says the club has now entered phase two which is bringing in players to improve his starting XI.

"After the QPR game, when we started planning, we had two phases of building the team for the new season," said the 52-year-old who celebrates his birthday today.

"The first is to try and keep the players who were here last year – that we wanted to keep of course.

"Players like Grady, Callum, Filip.

"Phase two is to bring in the players you want to improve your team. It's not easy. A lot of clubs are waiting.

"We have done the first phase well – we have got Grady and Callum. And we are doing everything and I am sure we are going to secure Filip.

"That is not easy to do, it also needs money and negotiation skill.

"The second phase at the moment is more difficult.

"We are doing everything to be creative but it's not easy to be creative without the proper funds for the players we are talking about and that we want to get.

"We don't want quantity players we want players that will improve us straight away. And those players cost money.

"But we are trying, we are close to doing a couple more deals. We are doing everything to be in a better position."
