West Brom v Charlton Player Ratings

Albion and Charlton played out a 2-2 draw yesterday in a match that saw referee Matt Donohue grab the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Kyle Bartley of West Bromwich Albion is interviewed for West Bromwich Albion TV / Television after the match.

Here we rate the players.

SAM JOHNSTONE

Making spectacular double saves is now something Sam Johnstone just does. He did it at Leeds, he did at Middlesbrough. And he did it again here to deny Conor Gallagher and Naby Sarrr. Assured overall, in this form, there can't be a better keeper in the division. 8

DARNELL FURLONG

The full-back did well to win the ball in the build-up to Hal Robson-Kanu's goal. He also did everything he could to give Albion an outlet down the right. But Furlong had a couple of glorious chances to score and really should have taken one of them - with the first-half header arguably the easier of the two. 6

SEMI AJAYI

The less said about the penalty the better. It may have been Ajayi that was penalised. But he did nothing wrong and was massively let down by the officials and Naby Sarr who was clearly looking for it. But while that moment was not his fault, it’s fair to say the Nigerian international wasn’t at his commanding best here - with the defender hugely indebted to Kyle Bartley when he bailed him out following a loose pass which led to a chance for Macauley Bonne. 6

KYLE BARTLEY

Man of the Match. The defender raced back to make an outstanding goal-saving block to deny Bonne following Ajayi's loose pass. But that moment just capped what, overall, was an excellent display with Bartley dominant in the air, positionally excellent and neat and tidy on the ball. 8

NATHAN FERGUSON

The teenager has enjoyed an outstanding start to the season. But he was way off his best here. After Ben Purrington whipped in a cross, he fell asleep allowing Chris Solly to volley over. Ferguson was also turned by Gallagher in the build-up to Johnstone's double save. Deservedly given his marching orders for what was a poor challenge on Solly. 4

JAKE LIVERMORE

Booked in the first few minutes for a late challenge on Gallagher, Livermore didn't let the early caution affect him. Up against a midfield diamond, he and Romaine Sawyers were often outnumbered. But he worked relentlessly to regain possession and break up Charlton's play. 7

ROMAINE SAWYERS

The 27-year-old produced a lovely bit of skill and then a wonderful pass in the build-up to Robson-Kanu's goal. Just like Livermore, Sawyers popped up everywhere in a bid to create chances for his team and break-up Charlton's rhythm. 8

MATT PHILLIPS

The winger opened the scoring with a smart finish from a Matheus Pereira cross. He also put the ball on a plate for Grady Diangana to tap home - only for the West Ham loanee to see his effort saved by the keeper. Phillips, though, probably should have scored a second early in the second-half. 8

MATHEUS PEREIRA

Another fantastic performance from the Brazilian who found space in little pockets despite Charlton trying to pack the midfield. Pereira sent in a wonderful cross for Phillips' goal. From a similar delivery, Furlong also should have scored. His clever delayed pass also helped create the chance for Diangana. 8

GRADY DIANGANA

A bizarre afternoon for the winger who was sent off in a case of mistaken identity. He also filled in a left-back for a brief spell after Ferguson eventually made way. Diangana's pace and quick feet made him a threat all afternoon. But he really should have scored the chance created for him by Phillips and Pereira. 7

CHARLIE AUSTIN

The striker pressed all afternoon - with that work rate leading to a chance for Furlong. Overall, though, Austin had another quiet game with the forward barely having a shot of note. That has now happened a few too many times with his place surely under threat when Kenneth Zohore returns to fitness. 5

Substitutes

HAL ROBSON-KANU (for Austin 71)

You could argue Robson-Kanu used his hand in the build-up to his goal. But he still did wonderfully well to curl the ball into the corner when Charlton’s defence stepped off. Just like against Fulham, QPR, Middlesbrough, the Welshman made another big contribution from the bench. 8

CONOR TOWNSEND (for Phillips 71)

Just like against Barnsley, the full-back impressed with his left-foot proving to be a real asset. Now likely to get a chance from the start against Stoke. 7

CHRIS BRUNT (for Diangana 88) N/A

Not used: Bond, Hegazi, Edwards, Krovinovic.
