Monk has impressed at St Andrew’s this season, guiding Blues to safety despite a nine-point deduction from the EFL.

Caretaker boss Jimmy Shan remains in charge until the end of the season, when Albion will make an appointment depending on which division they’re in.

And Monk has emerged as a potential candidate should the Baggies remain in the Championship.

Albion approached Wagner about taking over from Darren Moore when he was sacked in March.

The former Huddersfield Town boss told Albion he could not get back into English football this season due to the details of his Terriers contract.

Albion were interested in Wagner because of his experience leading Huddersfield Town out of the Championship.

However, the German is now reportedly speaking to Schalke about their vacant position.

Schalke finished second in the Bundesliga last season, but have been embroiled in a relegation fight this campaign.

They have been without a manager since March, when they sacked Domenico Tedesco following a 7-0 thrashing in the Champions League at the hands of Manchester City.

Wagner left the doomed Terriers in January by mutual consent, and has been in the running for several jobs in England since.

Shan has been given the reins until the end of the season after impressing during his time in temporary charge.

He has delivered 19 points from his nine games in charge so far, giving him the best points-per-game ratio of any manager in the Championship this season.
