Kieran Gibbs: West Brom can draw on March win if they meet Aston Villa in play-offs

Kieran Gibbs reckons Albion can draw on their recent victory at Villa Park if they meet their old rivals in the play-offs.

The Baggies look destined to collide with Villa in the play-off semi-finals, with both teams currently in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Villa have won nine games in a row for the first time in over a century, but Albion have five wins in seven games under caretaker boss James Shan.

And Gibbs reckons the Baggies will have the mental edge of beating Villa 2-0 on their home turf just last month.

"If it is that, we had a positive result against them in the last game," said Gibbs. "They are on a good run of form as well so it will be an exciting game.

"It will be a local derby as well. It is good for the league and will be an exciting end to the Championship this year."

However, Gibbs hasn't ruled out putting pressure on the top two in the remaining three games, starting away at Reading today.

Albion are six points behind Sheffield United and Leeds, so a late charge is unlikely to force Shan's men into contention, but Gibbs says the Baggies can't let up, just in case.

"You don’t want to take your foot off the gas and anything can happen," said Gibbs. "Nothing is out of the question yet.

"We found ourselves in a little bit of a strange position over the last couple of weeks, a bit of no man’s land and now we are not looking over our shoulders anymore, I don’t think.

"For us now I think it is about just keeping momentum and seeing whatever can happen in the last three games."

Gibbs has recently returned from injury in fine form, and capped off a brilliant performance against Hull on Good Friday with a goal.

And he's confident he'll be in tip-top shape for the play-offs.

"It has come just at the right time so I can get some games under my belt and just get used to the match fitness again because this league is relentless," he said.

"The ball just seems to fly. There is no break in the game. You have to be really, really fit to stay in this league.

"I’ve still played a big, big part of the season which I’m happy with.

"Hopefully I get more minutes over the next two or three games and it puts me in the best position and look forward to what comes next."
