The Baggies fans took part in a round of applause during the 34th minute of Saturday’s 1-0 win at Griffin Park, with many of the home fans joining in.

Simon’s parents John and Maggie and his sister Michelle watched it through a special stream from the club and subsequently issued a statement.

“We are so grateful to everyone who has taken the trouble to offer their sympathy and support,” said John.

“The messages across the club’s social media and that wonderful tribute by the fans on Saturday provide some comfort and warmth at a sad time for us all.

“I know Simon would have enjoyed most of all that winning goal!

“But we really cannot thank you all enough for your kind words and thoughts.

“Simon always felt he was working for a special club and these are the kind of things which prove he was right about that. Thanks to you all.”

Carrington was Albion’s general counsel and club secretary and was appointed in 2013.

He was diagnosed with cancer in September and continued to work from home during his illness.

He passed away last week, and caretaker boss James Shan dedicated Saturday’s win to him.
