Darren Moore doesn't regret making all West Brom's subs before extra-time

Darren Moore says Hal Robson-Kanu's injury in extra-time that restricted Albion to 10 men was the turning point of their FA Cup defeat to Brighton, but he doesn't regret making all four of his substitutions beforehand.

Moore took Jay Rodriguez off at half-time for Craig Dawson, before sending on youngsters Rayhaan Tulloch, 18, and Morgan Rogers, 16, in the second half. He then brought Ahmed Hegazi on for Dawson after 90 minutes, even though the centre-back had only played 45 minutes.

The Baggies boss revealed that neither Rodriguez nor Dawson were injured, and that the substitutions were purely tactical.

But five minutes into extra-time, Robson-Kanu limped off through injury, forcing the Baggies to play the remaining 25 minutes with just 10 men.

Chris Hughton brought Glenn Murray on soon after and he scored two goals to put Brighton through 3-1.

"Jay came off because we felt it was right to take Jay off at that time and put Craig on," said Moore. "When we put him on we altered the shape. It was nothing to do with the boos (from the Brighton fans). He's not injured.

When asked about the Dawson substitute, Moore said: "That was tactical as well. Dawson's fine. Jay, Dawse and Ahmed will be contention for the weekend."

But Moore said he did not regret making those changes, even though Robson-Kanu was then forced off through injury.

"You can't legislate for these things," he said. "You can suffer an injury in the first minute or the last minute, it's just one of those things.

"I thought Hal was causing them problems tonight, it looks like he's gone to change direction, it might be his thigh or hip, I'll let the medical team see to him in the morning.

"I thought that was where the game changed. Once we lost Hal, two things, it brought us down to ten men and I thought it energised Brighton to know we were losing one of our seniors.

"Down to ten men with youngsters on the pitch, and when you’re able to bring someone off the bench of (Glenn) Murray’s goal scoring prowess. And he’s scored both the goals. That was the deciding factor in the match tonight."

When Moore was asked if he regretted leaving his star striker, Dwight Gayle, on the bench, in relation to Hughton sending on match-winner Murray, he said: "I don't regret it, because you can look at it in hindsight, that's a great thing after the event.

"I thought Hal was causing them problems and young Rayhaan Tulloch has got wonderful speed and agility, with an acute eye for goal. I've got no hesitation in seeing him.

"I've got no complaints not bringing Dwight off the bench. If we could look in a crystal ball and avoided losing Hal we would have done.

"That was the deciding point in the game. Once he went off we went to 10 men and it gave Brighton a bit more energy. It came from their ranks. Chris made a tactical change that won them the game in the end."

The Baggies spent the last 25 minutes with 10 men, but Brighton should have been reduced to 10 men in the first half when Florin Andone swung a vicious elbow at Sam Field.

"I didn’t see the incident," said Moore. "I can’t really comment on it. When I go downstairs and get with the analysis guys, I’ll have a look at it then.

"I’ve not spoken to any of the players. I’ve come out and spoken to the analysis guys and said ‘anything in the game?’. He said there was a penalty incident, which I didn’t think was a penalty."

VAR was in use for the original tie but not in place at The Hawthorns for the replay, and when Moore was asked if that might have changed the outcome, he said: "That’s a fair point.

"Had it been used it might have been picked up but again I’m hearing and trusting what you guys are saying.

"I believe there was an incident and hearing from you guys that if they’d have picked it up it looks like he would have been shown the red card.

"I would be guessing at an answer to give you which would be wrong."

Hughton also claims he missed Andone's elbow, saying: "It's the first I've heard about it. Normally, if there's any incidents in the game generally I know about it. I must admit, I haven't seen it, nobody's mentioned it to me."
