Darren Moore's men led with 10 minutes of normal time remaining, but another defensive error after two on Saturday allowed Brighton back into the game before the Premier League side made a man advantage count in extra-time.

After nearly 170 minutes of stalemate it was always going to take something weird to break the deadlock between these two teams.

Kyle Bartley was behind the goal when he gave Albion the lead in the 77th minute, wrapping his long leg around the post after the Brighton players stopped to touch home from one yard out.

But four minutes later the centre-back undid all his own work, gifting Brighton an equally ridiculous equaliser with a defensive error Florin Andone pounced on.

Andone shouldn't have been on the pitch after swinging an elbow at Sam Field in the first half, but the Baggies only had themselves to blame for his equaliser.

It should have been 11v10 in Albion's favour for most of the game, but the Baggies were a man down for the majority of extra-time after Hal Robson-Kanu picked up an injury and substitute Glenn Murray scored twice.

Albion's second string battled to a goalless draw in the original tie and that resolute back five were rewarded with starting places in the replay.

But the Baggies lacked a cutting edge that day, and Darren Moore beefed up his midfield and attack with Jake Livermore and Jay Rodriguez respectively.

The striker caught this first glimpse at goal seven minutes in thanks to a delightful ball in behind from Sam Field, which Rodriguez chested down, before stinging David Button's palms from a narrow angle.

He did it again five minutes later, but this time from 30 yards out, as the Baggies started the match on the front foot.

Darren Moore may have made seven changes to his line-up but Chris Hughton made 10, and the threat of a relegation battle appeared to loom largely over them.

Button looked nervy, but then it was Jonathan Bond's turn to palm a long-range effort around the post unconvincingly before Florin Andone flashed a header wide from the resulting corner.

Albion were building attacks from the back, and nearly scored a well-worked team goal when Tyrone Mears burst to the byline before pulling the ball back to Wes Hoolahan, but the diminutive Irishman couldn't get enough power on his flick.

The last time Brighton were at The Hawthorns, Gaetan Bong accused Jay Rodriguez of racism, and the away fans were giving the striker plenty of stick, chanting: "Jay Rodriguez, we know what you are."

Albion fans responded with boos and a chant of "smelly b*****d" in relation to Rodriguez's defence against Bong's accusations that he was merely saying his breath smelled.

If tempers were rising off the field, they were also beginning to flare on-pitch too, and shortly before the half-hour mark Florin Andone should have been shown red after swinging a dangerous elbow into Sam Field's face.

However, referee Paul Tierney missed it, and with no VAR to consult like the original tie, Andone went unpunished.

Brighton gained the upper hand after that, and started to bombard the Baggies' goal.

Bond saved well from Knockaert before Livermore blocked an Andone shot.

Brighton's record signing Alireza Jahanbakhsh then clattered the crossbar with a header before Andone flashed a good chance wide.

The Baggies responded, and hit the bar themselves with a screaming volley from distance from Hal Robson-Kanu after good work by Rodriguez.

Brighton had the ball in the net just before half-time, but Andone had strayed a good two yards offside and his header was correctly ruled out.

Rodriguez was removed from the firing line at half-time, replaced by Craig Dawson as Moore switched to a back three.

But that took the sting out of Albion's attack and it was Jahanbakhsh who forced the next save after skipping inside Kyle Bartley.

Harper was moved forward into a number 10 role, and he flashed a shot wide after expert hold-up play by Robson-Kanu and a deft ball from Hoolahan.

Both sides were flirting with a goal but still lacked a cutting edge. Bissouma went close for Brighton before Field fired over for the Baggies.

On the hour mark, Moore sent on 18-year-old Rayhaan Tulloch for his home debut in place of Livermore.

But the Baggies were fortunate not to concede a penalty soon after when Mears caught Jahanbakhsh in the box.

The game seem destined to finish goalless again until Bartley's bizarre goal 13 minutes from time.

The centre-back was behind the goal when Hoolahan's free-kick looped off a Brighton head, but the visitors all stopped for some reason, and Bartley wrapped a long leg around the post to guide the ball in from one yard out.

Tulloch put a header wide before four minutes after scoring a ridiculous goal, Bartley conceded one at the other end.

His mix-up with Dawson allowed Andone through on goal, and the striker who shouldn't have been on the pitch slotted under Bond to score the first goal the 25-year-old has conceded in Albion colours.

Morgan Rogers, 16, was then brought on for his debut, five days after scoring four goals in one match for the under-23s.

Jurgen Locadia put the ball into Albion's net in injury time, but he was correctly flagged offside and the tie headed to extra-time.

Ahmed Hegazi came on as the extra fourth sub for extra-time, replacing Dawson, who only lasted 45 minutes.

But the young team's task became even tougher eight minutes into extra-time when Robson-Kanu was forced off through injury, reducing the Baggies to 10 men.

It should have been 11v10 in Albion's favour for most of the game, but now it was 11v10 to the visitors.

And then Hughton played his trump card, and it worked almost immediately.

It took just a few minutes for star striker Glenn Murray to give Brighton the lead, bundling in at the back post after Locadia had beaten Bartley to the byline.

The home fans barely broke singing, aware of the tough task their young side faced.

Hughton brought Bong on at half-time of extra-time and the full-back received loud boos every time he touched the ball.

Rogers had a glorious chance to take it to penalties five minutes before the end, but he mistimed his free header six yards out.

And moments later Murray wrapped up the game against a tired Albion side four minutes before the whistle, firing in his second of the evening to put the Seagulls out of sight.

Having been 10 minutes away from going through, it will be a gutting defeat for Moore's men.
