Morton, currently on loan at Braintree, hit a treble for the National League Premier basement boys in their 4-0 home win over Barnet on Saturday.

It meant all the more reason for the academy product to celebrate his 19th birthday.

And he admitted: “I couldn’t have asked for a much better birthday, to be honest.

“I got the match ball – the first of my career and my first in senior football, so I was delighted. It was a good day all round.”

Morton was involved in the game’s key moment after being hauled down in the third minute by Barnet goalkeeper Mark Cousins.

With the keeper shown a straight red card, Morton got back up to slot home the penalty and then struck again in the 33rd and 61st minutes.

“I’ve already got the match ball in my bag to take home and I shall cherish it and remember the game for a long time,” continued Morton, who will remain in Essex until the end of the season.

“I’m really enjoying my football here. Our aim is to stay in this division.”
