Hull City 1 West Brom 0 - Player ratings

Albion's winless streak was extended to four games at the KCOM Stadium yesterday when Hull City beat them 1-0. Here, we rate the players.

Sam Johnstone

Rooted to the spot when Jackson Irvine hit the bar in the build up to Fraizer Campbell’s winner, and still looks suspect under the high ball into the box. Made one smart save to his left in the second half and was more confident with the ball at his feet. 6/10

Craig Dawson

Allowed Kamil Grosicki to run in behind him too easily in the opening stages, although the system left him isolated. Looked more solid defensively in a back four, but gave away possession far too regularly throughout the game by misplacing simple passes. 5/10

Ahmed Hegazi

Won a match-high five headers, and made an important tackle to deny Campbell four yards out. Also had a header cleared off the line. But gave the ball away too much, particularly in the second half and was nearly made to pay when he let Markus Henriksen rob him on the byline. 5/10

Tosin Adarabioyo

The pick of Albion’s back line and probably the whole team. Barely put a foot wrong all game, despite being asked to play as a left-sided centre-half in the first half and a right-back in the second half. Deserves to keep his place in the side against Leeds. 7/10

Matt Phillips

When he’s on song he’s unplayable, but he struggled to get going in this game, with the majority of Albion’s attacks going down the other wing. His corners were dangerous but he struggled to threaten from open play. Brought off with 25 minutes to play. 5/10

Chris Brunt

Came off with a hamstring injury after roughly half an hour. Before that, he misplaced a couple of square passes that allowed Hull to counter. He is busy, and is always looking for the ball, but is arguably being played out of position. 5/10

Jake Livermore

Shifted the ball from side to side and tried to get Albion going, but was unable to find the killer pass into any forward players, who were either crowded out or not making runs. A frustrating afternoon for him and his team-mates. 5/10

Conor Townsend

Impressed against his hometown club and in front of his friends and family, particularly in the first half. Might have won a penalty, and always looked to attack with penetration, unlike some of his team-mates. Tailed off in the second half, but overall, a solid performance. 7/10

Harvey Barnes

Apart from one bursting run on the counter in the first half, the youngster struggled to make any sort of impact. Was rarely on the same page as his team-mates, and as frustrations grew, so did the errors. But when he’s not firing and Dwight Gayle is out, Albion struggle. 5/10

James Morrison

Moved forward to play off Rodriguez alongside Barnes and was the Albion player who looked most like unlocking Hull in the first half. Played the ball into Townsend for the penalty appeal, but he tailed off in the second half as the sole No.10 and was subbed off. 6/10

Jay Rodriguez

Screwed a first-time volley inches wide, had a shot well blocked by Tommy Elphick, and found Morrison on the edge of the box too. Never stopped running, but was unable to make a dent on Hull’s back line, who won the majority of headers. 6/10

Substitutes

Sam Field (Brunt 34)

Kept possession well and made some important interventions. But can sometimes be guilty of passing backwards too much. 6/10

Bakary Sako (Morrison 65)

A poor cameo from the new signing after his promising debut last weekend. Lost possession too regularly and several attacks broke down with him. 4/10

Oliver Burke (Phillips 65)

Did not make the desired impact off the bench. 4/10

Unused: Myhill, Mears, Hoolahan, Robson-Kanu
