The 47-year-old, who spent five successful years at The Hawthorns as technical director, has played a huge role in England's recent success at both junior and senior level.

However, the Seagulls have opened negotiations with Ashworth and the FA, and he is now set for a return to club football.

The Baggies are close to appointing a new technical director themselves, with Nottingham Forest's sporting director Luke Dowling favourite to land the role.

Dowling worked with Albion head coach Darren Moore five years ago when he was head of recruitment at Blackburn Rovers and Moore was first team coach under Michael Appleton.
