Ally Robertson: Attitude is key once the games get going

I was pleased to see James Morrison sign a new contract, because he’s someone who wants to play for us.

He was a miss last season, make no mistake, and he has experience getting promoted out of this league with this club.

Listening to his words after he signed, it’s obvious that as well repaying Darren Moore for having faith in him, he wants to right the wrongs of last season after being forced to sit out for most of it.

That desire is the crucial part for me.

Over the next few days we are going to see whether Albion’s big guns are snapped up or not.

The Baggies are demanding fees of £20m for Jay Rodriguez and Craig Dawson, and there is uncertainty over Salomon Rondon’s future too.

But with deadline day fast approaching, time is running out for Albion to find suitable replacements with that cash.

If any of them do end up staying, one of Moore’s biggest hurdles will be getting them playing for the club again.

We’ve seen in the recent past that players have struggled to recover after failing to get their desired moves away.

But after watching Moore unify the squad towards the end of last season, I’m confident that he can get them back on track. He’s the sort of character you want to play for.

We have to wait and see what sort of characters those players are, but based on their performances in Albion colours, none of them strike me as the type to down tools.

All three give 100 per cent to every game, and I'd be surprised if that changed if they were still here after deadline day.

Anyway, if they don’t get their moves, they need to knuckle down and play well enough to keep clubs interested in them.

It won’t do their career prospects much good to pack it in.

I only experienced this sort of situation once in my career. When my dad was sick, I wanted to move to Rangers, and they offered me big money too, but Big Ron said no and that was that.

It didn’t affect my commitment on a Saturday, and that’s what these players will have to prove if the club decide against selling them.

Regardless of what's going on behind the scenes, we've got two games in the next four days that need everyone's full attention.

Summer business can always get a bit messy, but when the football starts, the squad and the coaching staff need to be focused on the job in hand.

Hopefully we get off to a good start today.
