James had looked set to become the sixth signing of the summer for the Baggies after the two clubs agreed a fee of £400,000.

But the deal is now off, leaving boss Darren Moore to look elsewhere for a right-back.

Yeovil announced James would be staying put on Thursday morning, claiming in a statement the Wales under-21 international had failed to agree personal terms.

But it is understood the move instead collapsed due to James failing his medical. Though the issue detected is not thought to have been major, it was enough to put the Baggies off completing the deal.

Moore may now decide to revive his interest in Luton's Jack Stacey.

Highly-rated James played 51 times for Yeovil last season, helping them reach the fourth round of the FA Cup and the semi-final of the Checkatrade Trophy.

He scooped a host of end-of-season awards at the League Two club, and was also interesting Swansea and Hull earlier this window.
