Albion’s record signing started just two league games for the Baggies last season, but returned from injury towards the end of the campaign and featured in the last two matches as a substitute.

That was enough to convince Belgium boss Roberto Martinez to include the 28-year-old in his provisional squad and Chadli played 45 minutes in a goalless draw with Portugal on Saturday.

He has now been included in Belgium’s strong squad for the summer and could feature against England in their final Group G game on Thursday, June 28.

There is no place in the Belgium squad for former Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

Martinez said leaving Benteke out “has been the toughest decision.”

“But it is for the balance of the squad,” he added. “We have two number nines. Michy Batshuayi and Romelu Lukau have taken those positions.”

Belgium are 10/1 to win the World Cup this summer, making them sixth-favourites to lift the trophy.

Chadli is the first Albion player to be named in a 23-man squad although defenders Ahmed Hegazi and Ali Gabr are expected to be heading to Russia after being included in Egypt’s provisional 29-man squad.

Former loanee Grzegorz Krychowiak has been named in Poland’s provisional 32-man squad and Jake Livermore is on stand-by for England.

Chadli's future at Albion is up in the air because the midfielder has a £17million relegation release clause in his contract.

When he was asked recently if he'd played his last game for the Baggies he said: "I don't know."
