Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson admitted yesterday's victory over Albion was 'tinged with sadness' for the Baggies.

Hodgson, who enjoyed a successful period as Albion manager before England came calling, was treated to plenty of love from both the home and away fans on the final day of the season.

He was given a hero's welcome by the Palace fans, who also unfurled a new banner for the Croydon-born manager that read: "From the terrace to the dugout. One Roy Hodgson."

But the travelling Baggies fans also gave the 70-year-old a warm reception and sang: "We love Hodgson more than you," at the home fans.

And after the game Hodgson spared a thought for his former club on a day of personal celebration.

"It's a day that is tinged with sadness because I'm really sad to see West Brom go down," he said. "They are a very good club with fantastic fans.

"At the start of the season I couldn't dream that West Brom would be one of the teams to go down.

"Our success is to their detriment to some extent, I spare a thought for them and their players, especially the ones I worked with."
