Chris Brunt: Darren Moore deserves a knighthood if West Brom stay up

Chris Brunt says Darren Moore has put himself in ‘pole position’ for the permanent job – and joked that the caretaker boss would deserve a knighthood if he managed to keep the Baggies up.

Moore has completely turned around Albion’s fortunes with a five-game unbeaten run that has kept their survival hopes alive until the final week of the season.

He’s beaten Manchester United, Newcastle, and Tottenham, as well as earned draws against Swansea and Liverpool.

In fact, Albion are currently on the longest unbeaten streak in the Premier League, having lost nine games in a row before Moore took over.

And Brunt, who has been handed the captain’s armband by the caretaker boss, thinks he deserves the full-time job.

“To be fair if results go our way and we manage to win at the weekend and the unbelievable happens he’ll get more than the job I think,” Brunt joked last night on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He’ll get freedom (of the city), a knighthood, is there an election soon, can we vote for him?

“Nah look, he’s done a great job under the circumstances.

"He’s been thrown in, I don’t know what his own aspirations are, managerial-wise or coaching, but he’s stepped up to the plate for us and done really well. He’s definitely put himself in pole position I’d say.”

Albion need Swansea and Southampton to draw tonight (Tuesday) to keep their chances of staying up alive.

If that happens, the Baggies need to beat Crystal Palace on the final day of the season and hope Swansea lose to bottom club Stoke and Southampton lose to Manchester City.

They also need to overturn a five-goal deficit in goal difference with Saints.
