The winger admitted a lot of players will be looking for move if the Baggies drop to the Championship as they have got to look after themselves ‘first and foremost’.

He also urged fans not to label those who leave as ‘snakes’.

In a statement ‘for the uneducated’, though, McClean insisted he was speaking in general terms.

The statement read: "Let me clarify my comments for the uneducated.

"I was asked a question if and only if... we got relegated and I gave an honest answer, in which I said whenever teams do get relegated then players will discuss what's next in terms of their future, what's best for their career and their families, which history shows happens at every club in that position!

"This is what I was making reference to.

“I did not say me or any other players’ name so take that whatever which way you want.”
